I'm wondering why you need to rid of ants if you only have fire ants? Most ants are not a problem, they ariate things like grass for free!

If you don't like them, you can use Over and Out. It will kill all ant species.

i'll tell you what, i have a dianthus on what we affectionately call "our mound" out in front. it is planted next to a huge stone that is too heavy to move, and it is literally the only plant at all that really survived up on that thing, and i truly believe it is due to the ants that are constantly tearing up that area to build hives up to the rock. it literally quadrupled in size this past year.

not sure what type of ants they are - it just seemed these little mounds and holes they make would hurt my grass. But I see your point - A natural aeration!

How do I know what type of ants they are?

stick your finger in the mound and see if they bite? ;)

if you really want to know what they are, i'd suggest that you collect some from the nest and take them to your local University of Georgia Extension Service location and let their entomologists check them over. they can tell you what species they are.
