does this have medicinal value?

I was in Panama in February, and while I was there I visited the Embera Indians. The guide showed us this plant and suggested that it has medicinal value (in the treatment of "habits"). I believe that is it a renealmia. Is this correct? Has anyone heard of this medicinal value?
Also, are there any instructions for growing and caring for renealmia?
