ID and info needed please

I think this is ginger, but I know nothing about them. It's growing on the premises where I work, back on the border of some houses (I think it spread under the wooden fence.)

My questions are:

What are the requirements, and can it grow from a cutting?

I have very sandy soil, and it gets very dry sometimes. I can furnish it with full sun to mostly shade, but if it needs damp soil I'm out of luck! (sorry the picture isn't sharper, it was getting dark.

It's a Costus. Looks like some form of C. scaber, but the names keep changing, so I'm not 100% sure.

Most Costus can be grown from stem cuttings. They're fairly adaptable as to light conditions, but probably would not be happy in dry, sandy soil. If you could mix in some compost or other organic matter as you plant, and keep it well-watered, it would help.
