Welcome Katy. I remember the days of trying to save my rosemary over the long zone 5 winters when I lived in Chicago. I am sure you will be thrilled with the increased varieties of herbs that grow here.

I'm glad you are so interested in herbs. I love them, much of my garden is made up from perennial herbs purchased from my favorite, (and now defunct) local nursery. There is a wonderful book or two on Southern Herb growing. I found herb growing challenging here at first. Although many more are perennial, finding exactly what some of the more unusual herbs need to make it through the heat and humidity of July and August and making our soil more herb friendly was a lesson in trial and error, but very interesting!
You will need to make sure you go see the historic gardens in Sandy Springs at the History center. You may also enjoy going a very broad variety of antique roses here. I also love historic plants and gardens and lots of pass-a-long plants which are often otherwise hard to come by.

Be careful, I've lost two rosemarys already! One to cold, one to too much sun.

I'm also a transplanted (good word for gardeners) northerner and the one thing to keep in mind is the sun. Full sun here is not the same as full sun up north. Plus the altitude here is a bit higher, so the sun is even stronger. The cold hardiness zone is just that, cold hardiness. It doesn't really guide you about heat or sun.

Also - SUNSCREEN and good sunglasses/hat are a must. The first year I was here, I went out in late February to weed the lawn and got sun-stroke.

Otherwise, it's a gardeners paradise. I sent pictures of my yard to my mom back in NY and she is seething with jealousy. We are in full bloom and they are just starting.
