We have HUGE snails and slugs here. They generally leave my gingers alone. They seem to like my kaempferia pulchra, but that was the only ginger affected. They LOVE heliconias though! Of course, you have a different species of these lovely creatures where you live, so they might have different appetites.

Thank you your answer. I am going to try one. We also have slugs up to 8 inches here and smaller snails that climb well. I won't try heliconias though. I already bought a hardy banana this fall that is now dormant so I'll guess I'll learn from experience if they are slug resistant.

Sorry I forgot to say this, I am fairly new at posting, but does anyone else have experience with the Pacific Northwest slugs? They are not thwarted by copper or any sharp objects,and anything that has to be applied after it rains is useless because it only takes one night for a plant to be gone. I hang plants and have only a limited space on the porch. I was thinking of doing a saucer of water with the plant raised in the middle, kind of like a moat. I don't think they can walk on water! Do you know of any tropical or sub-tropical plants they don't eat that can take cool summers? I know they eat brugmansias but I have them anyway, I can only protect so much.
