You probably have Hedychium Coronarium. Google it. If you live in zone 9 as you indicate, this ginger will thrive in the ground in your zone. Prefers more shade than sun but needs some sun to flower. Here along the Gulf Coast, if we have a cold winter they will die to the ground and come back in the spring. Under these circumstances, white butterfly ginger blooms in late summer. In a mild winter, they don't go dormant completely and bloom all summer. This ginger is hardy to zone 7.

I have the same problem and I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to get the butterfly ginger to bloom. Mine are in the ground, get lots of water (gray water) and seem to be triving. They get some dappled morning and noon sun through the trees( but are basically in shade), and a straight shot of afternoon sun for 2-3 hours. The plants/stalks/leaves are about 3 feet high. Last year they didn't bloom, last winter they were hit by some cold weather and died back but are looking healthy this year. But as of today no sign of blooms.

Would a flowering and blooming fertilizer help?

I do fertilize with a super bloom fertilizer when I think about it. It seems to help.
