There is a non-gesneriad which is often thought to be a gessie named Mexican Foxglove, Tetranemia or tetranema (??). I havne't grown it so I can't say that this is your plant, but I don't recognize it. Perhaps a google picture search will answer your question.

I tried googling it, but I couldn't find any pictures. I found one drawing, but the way it showed the flowers and how they were attached to the plant is not like mine. I do suspect that it is not a gessie after all though.

I don't believe it's a gesneriad. It may be Ruellia or some other member of the related family Acanthaceae.

I think John is on the right tract. It has the "look" of an acanth like ruellia. Acanthacea is a family closely related to gesneriacea and share the five petal format. Pseuderanthemum (spelling??) is another genus that has foliage like your's. There is also Sanchezia (again--spelling??), which has some small growing species.
