For confederate jasmine, do serpentine layering in spring or take semi-ripe or greenwood cuttings (nodal or internodal) in summer or autumn.

Clematis depends on the type: seeds or semi-ripe cuttings for species; layering for montana; grafting for large-leaved hybrids, softwood cuttings for decidous cultivars. I know that is kind of vague, but AHS's Plant Propagation book can be kind of vague.

Good luck with the Clematis. I have been trying for years to propagate a C. viorna. The dang seeds take over ten months to germinate and so far haven't ever for me. Looks like I will just have to bite the bullet and divide the plant to get another. Cuttings of every size always fail and this vine has such a 'crispy' stem it's hard to pull it to the ground to layer. Kinda like bending dry spaghetti. Maybe I should ask if anyone in Clematis forum has ever air layered one?

Viorna seed wants a cold period, after which it comes up erratically all spring and summer. I sow it in a flat in Sept or Oct and put it in a sheltered spot outside. It winters over there and I start seeing seedlings in late April, continuing on until August or so.
