Tradescantia is the Latin term. And yes, that is a Spiderwort. They do Ok in shade but prefer a few hours of sun.

i find them all the time(in the sun, shade, woods, lawn) and i never planted it. seems it migrated to my place from the neighbors' house and wants to keep on going.

Here's a picture of what I was told is spiderwort, right across the sidewalk. It was already there and has been there for years. Obviously the petals are similar, the only thing that seems different is the leaves. I haven't inspected that closely yet. The spiderwort's close to the ground, though, and the other plant is almost 2' high. Guess I'll have to do some research.

I deleted them from ImageShack - sorry about that. I wanted to delete the whole post then realized I can't. It turned out to be long bracted spiderwort.
