Sun, part-sun, or shade?

hmm. its on the east side of my house and there is a river birch sort of front and off to the west a bit that blocks a reasonable amount of the southern light but mostly I'd say sun or at a min. part sun.

Well, this isn't evergreen and it isn't a shrub, but if it gets enough sun and there is enough space to plant it away from a wall, I'd do a crepe myrtle - not one of those little miniatures, but one that's going to get big. It won't cover anything, but it sure will give you some vertical architectural interest in front of that wall. Then you could do three medium size shrubs and maybe 5 smaller shrubs to bridge the gap between the ground and the top of the crepe myrtle (when it's full grown). I'm convinced there is no way to hide a wall so you might as well have something to look at that's more interesting than a wall. Is this the same wall with the roses growing on it?

if it faces east with nothing in front of it, and is protected from afternoon sun, it's in a nice situation. Hollies would work in sun -- yaupon holly tree, Foster's or Inkberry hollies; also smaller conifers like some types of chamaecyparis or arborvitae. Abelia is mostly evergreen and has flowers all summer that the bees visit.

Are you looking for something to keep people from going over the edge of the wall (plunging 10 feet to the lower level)?
