Cobb does or did have a Compost Plant, privately run, on County Farm Rd near the waste pick-up station. I do not know if it is still in operation, but it was not free. There was a small charge for it. There was a lot of controversy about the smell when it first opened a few years ago. They closed it, resolved that problem, but I do not know if it continues to be open. I think it does, because the County also collects yard debris at a site close by, mulches it or carries it to the Compost plant. You can probably get info on the Compost plant from the County Waste Station.

Cobb County's compost facility is indeed open and is FREE. I go regularly, the last time was just about three weeks ago. It is at 2500 Pitner Rd, just off of County Line Road, north of Due West Road. The only problem is that I don't know if it is free to the world or just to Cobb Co. residents. There is a sign, once you're inside the grounds that explains how they work and I am sure I read it a long time ago, but don't remember any details. They are only open on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 9:00 to maybe 3:00. Take your own shovels, manure spreader, and a jug of water and load your vehicle, containers, whatever. The Cobb County Compost facility is located 2150 County Services Parkway, which runs off Austell Road (in Marietta, near Jim Miller Park). Compost and mulch are available free to residents (officially residents of Cobb County, but they've never asked me for ID). It's really a high quality finished product, and you can get more information at the Cobb County website. About as "high tech" as compost can be, I guess!

About 2 months ago there was a sign at the pitner site saying it would be closed as of October 2006, but the pile was still there and the gate was open. Was that sign taken down?

(Effective OCT 02,2006 the facility has moved from the Pitner road location to the Cobb County Vegetative Waste Recycling site at 2150 County Services Parkway between Austell Road and Powder Springs Road. The hours of operation at the Vegetative Waste site will be 8:00 - 5:00 Mondays through Fridays, and 9:00 to 4:00 on Saturdays. Commercial compost operations will continue Mondays through Thursdays at the Pitner Road site until further notice.
