They come from Australia. They take sun and heat and bloom up until frost. They look good in baskets or edging beds. They spread (or trail) a good bit - maybe 18-24". They don't overwinter here and new plants are from cuttings - thus they are more expensive than bedding plants from seed.
Note: Rabbits love it. It was a major feature of my sunny bed two years ago when the rabbits discovered it. I have had to resort to keeping it in containers where the rabbits can't reach it.

They do not like to dry out. I wound up taking mine out of my hanging baskets last summer and planting them in the ground since they were not happy if I was even late with my watering. They went nuts in the ground and were beautiful. You may try adding some soil moist crystals to the baskets.

I planted 2 little 4-inch pots in the ground this year, I am hoping they will fill in nicely.

Just wondering... just learning how to collect seeds, and just read that scaevola aemula or fan flower, that new plants are from cuttings. No seeds to be collected?? So, where does one cut on the plant to start a new plant?

There are actually two varieties of this plant. One has larger leaves and flowers the other about half size. The smaller leaved plant WILL over-winter here and has come back year after year around my neighbors mailbox.

They're so cheap though and available at so many locations in late spring it's not really worth it to try to save cuttings and propagate yourself. If you want to though, cut branches with at least 5-6 leaf nodes(and no flowers) and root in water or rooting hormone and soiless mix. Remove leaves from lowest node and submerge in water or plant this node below soil level.
