I didn't think delphiniums would grow here in the hot, humid south but a neighbor just up the street from me has oddles of them come back every year. They are blue and white. I live in Mexietta (formerly Marietta).

I have yet to be able to grow them in this terrible heat and humidity. I was so disappointed too when I came to that realization and just finally gave up -- those were my favorite flowers (before I discovered daylilies that is). I would still LOVE to grow them if and when they develope some that like our climate. Until then I must force myself to pass them up at the nurseries.

I put out the two larger ones so that they would get some afternoon sun. I read somewhere that it helps to use lots of mulch to keep the roots cool and to water a lot. And they like lots of fertilizer and a more alkaline soil. The small ones I think I will just put in larger posts for the time being. And if they don't make it a second year, I still have lots of larkspur.

If you want the lovely blues, I suggest you stick with Larkspur;the heat and humidity here are tough for Delphiniums...Kind of like trying to grow Lupines here.... It just ain't gonna happen!!

Years ago, in Clayton County, I had a neighbor who grew a delphinium. It grew on the front of her house, which faced north. It was shaded on the west by the little stoop which had a roof. It returned every year. Just one lone delphinium, but it was beautiful.
