Mulching the lawn

I am wondering if anyone has ever done this and, if so, what was their result. I have noticed that some of the best lawn that I have is under the bird feeder. I move it annually and now I have large, green(er) polka dots all aver my yard where it has been in past years. I guess that all of the sunflower seed hulls hold moisture/improve the soil.

I have heard of topdressing the lawn with compost, but who ever has enough of that for their lawn? What would several years of a topdressing of pine bark fines do? Would it make the soil too acid for a lawn?
