Closeup of Sparkleberry?

esh ga, all,

Attached is a closeup of the leaves and flowers of the understory tree. I think that it is sparkleberry. Agree? I think that I will attempt to keep the sprouts pruned so it will be more treelike a reveal the trunk shape and bark.

Hi Steve,

Yes, those slightly rounded, glossy leaves are quite indicative of sparkleberry. The fact that they are blooming now and the blooms are held in "leafy-bracted racemes" would also serve to confirm that it is Vaccinium arboreum.

I believe that Farkleberry is another nickname/common name for it. In my native shrubs book (Foote & Jones), Farkleberry is listed in the index but the page number given is the same one for Sparkleberry.
