In the garden this morning ...

I learned that phlox has scent. Who knew? - probably most of you. I was bending over to tie them up after last week's rain knocked them down. I guess it was the first time I was close enough to detect a scent. Smell like funeral-home flowers, but still it's scent. By the way, I recommend phlox Miss Lingard if you want a healthy, early garden phlox.

I saw a racoon in the yard this morning. It's the first one I've ever seen - not just in my yard, but ever. It had hurt one of its paws and was carrying it off the ground. At first I thought it was a small dog - reminds that the first time my son saw a calf he thought it was a big puppy dog. We ned to learn the names of more animals.

Looking around this morning I realized that plants in my yard fall into two categories: they either thrive out of all bounds or they barely hang on. No middle ground. Nothing except the Autumn Joy sedum just behaves. This could be useful to know when I plan new beds. I have to stop putting thriving plants into the small beds and reserve them for the hangers-on.

Oh yeah, I learned how good it is to see sun again.

SugarHill-I'm glad you now know phlox has a scent and I didn't know either....I don't have any of them.

Guess what I saw in the garden this morning...right now!?
MORE RAIN!!!!! I'm sick of it. I long for some bright, cheery, warm (dry)sun!

And on a happy note....I have had since yesterday 3 humming birds in the garden fighting over our three feeders. I need more.....feeders and hummers!

I saw phlox Natascha at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Honestly, I never really knew why it was such a big thing to have phlox -- "one MUST have phlox" kind of attitudes I encounter often in books. It was never that exciting to me, until I saw and SMELLED Natascha. It's like white and pink pinwheel in color. This is something I must get.

Did you know gaillardia also has a scent? That was new to me this year too!!!

Lillies of the Valley smell good too, but you might get your nose dirty smelling them.! Or at least your knees....LOL

Sugarhill, You have never seen a raccoon ever? You mean in your whole life? Wow.

My Phlox 'David' show no signs of bloom yet so I can't smell them. And something keeps happening to them at the roots. Anyone know what is eating the roots of my phlox? I think that must be what's happening, they just sort of break off right at he base all of the sudden. They are still alive but one is just barely. I guess I should dig it up and have a look, but it is happening to some degree on all 3 plants, nothing else, just the phlox. Go figure.
