Hostas - no blooms, what am I doing wrong?

I planted several different types of Hostas last year. Didn't really have any blooms last year and I chalked it up to being new transplants.

However, I just walked through my neighborhood and see that several of my neighbor's hostas are blooming. And not a sign of a bloom on any of mine.

They're in a new bed that was tilled and amended pretty well. Some are in more sun than the others...ranges from getting sun 10am-2pm to just being filtered sun to no direct sun at all.

I'm a bit hesitant with water as I'm afraid to overwater and rot them, but they're not dried out by any means.

Any suggestions?

Only my dwarf hosta are blooming now. I will have more blooming in late june, and then lovely scented white species hostas blooming in August.

Hold on, they're comin'!

I don't have any blooms yet, and I always get blooms. I'm not worried - I expect they will appear later.

jmzms, your neighbors might have an early-blooming variety.

Some Hosta bloom very early, some of mine were in bloom when the Easter deep freeze came along, but weren't affected. Some are blooming now, others will bloom during the summer or fall. It's not that unusual for some to be in bloom during Thanksgiving or even Christmas Holiday seasons if the weather cooperates. If you grow many different cultivars, you could enjoy the flowers during 3 seasons.

As you might expect, some collectors that grow Hosta for the foliage alone, don't like or want flowers on their plants and routinely remove them. They do not want any of the plants energy expended in flower and seed production.

May I offer a warning? Hosta's can become addictive! I started growing a few pass along seedlings about 15 years ago and now have at least 500 different cultivars. Check some of the posts on the Hosta Forum and you will find a number of people that have become addicted. As far as I know, no antidote has been found!

Razorback is right! I am addicted to hostas, but I don't have 500 cultivars... yet! Like she said, different varieties bloom at different times and also soil, sun, and moisture conditions will have an effect on it too. I regularly lurk on the hosta forum. I have learned a lot there...

Mine just started putting out buds. I have the 'garden' variety green hosta from Home Depot.

I think something may be wrong with me.....I absolutely hate the blooms on hosta! I cut them off whenever they appear....I guess I just can't find the beauty in those flower stalks....lol
