Verbena dying bit by bit

I built several new flower beds this spring and planted a variety of flowers in them. The plants came from several different sources. Each bed was created the same way, ie. same soil mix, same fertilizer, etc. and they get about the same amount of sun. One bed edged with purple perennial verbena (something like "Homestead", I think) is doing great, spreading well and covered with flowers; another bed edged in the same variety from a different source, is not thriving, blooming sporadically, and every day I find a single stem on a plant dried up and dying. What is happening?

I have several beds of purple homestead verbena as well as several other varieties. One of my beds (one side of it) did the very same. I got mine from different sources, too. I cut it back, fertilized...and in a few weeks it was showing signs of life and eventually had blooms again. If it isn't cut back, some say, the blooms are not as prolific. Powdery mildew can hurt this plant. If that is a problem try little neem oil or other fungicide.

Also you could begin to propagate some new little guys off of a healthier plant.....just incase. Good Luck.

I find that my purple homestead verbena die out this time of year and come back bigger and stronger each Spring.
