Today we picked the two sisters: Corn and beans. Yesterday, we picked the other sister: Delicata Squash. The three sisters did well for us this season.

    Hi NC

I have 3 varieties of corn. On top with the beans is a yellow, large kernel variety. On the bottom are the red and purple variety.

The beans are Jeminez and red when not cooked, can be used as a green bean or as a shell bean.

The bean salad that I made has beans, corn, hot and sweet peppers, onion, parsley and oregano. Everything harvested from the garden. But the olive oil. :o)

    Thanks for the Info
The Coloured Corn Looks SO Cool!!!! Does it keep it's Colour when Cooked?

Yes, it looks bright red when cooked. It does take longer time to cook than the yellow, that is the reason I cooked them separately.

I have been to places that celebrate the corn harvest as a big occasion! They usually ferment the corn to make a delicious, alcoholic beverage.

Delicious? I have a bottle of "Georgia Moon" corn whiskey- and it's awful stuff.

The drink that I am talking about is not a whiskey. They do not bottle this, It is homemade and taste more like a juice. You probably never sampled. It would be like comparing fresh sugar cane juice and rum. Absolutely, two different tastes.

That's some beautiful corn and beans, Silvia. How ripe do you let the corn get before harvesting it?

    Hi Bill

On this kind of corn, it is difficult to judge the ripeness. Because you can only look and touch the ears. It is only when you opened the ears that you see the ripeness.

The yellow corn when picked at the stage that I picked, can be used like regular corn. It has more texture and flavor. You can easily separate the kernels with your fingers. You cannot do that with regular corn. You have to slice those with a knife. When later picked and they are dry, you can roast them and will have the flavor kind of like a popcorn but different.

It is usually eaten this way as side with a ceviche, usually shrimp or clam.

Now, the red and purple corn have to be picked when young,as soon as the tassels are brown, to be able to eat it as a regular corn. Be it boiling or stir fry. When picked later as I did some of them. They can be used as flour, seeds or fall decorations :o)

Now the beans are fantastic! They remind them a little bit of Borlotto Italian or cranberry beans. I grew those two.

Both were very tasty used as a green beans, but I liked them better as a shell beans.

And yesterday when I went to harvest some onions for the dish, since I finished the Vidalia type, I went to harvest the Multiplying onions and I found were I planted single small bulbs were like a lot of onions sprouting on the sides!

This onion is worth growing, I will try to post a picture. They were on the side of the house, next to the Bay tree.

Silvia, I will be running up and down the state this summer. I'll be dropping kids off at college. Please send directions to your roadside stand. I need a jar of canned bean salad!

(As always, in awe down here in Broward)

I have a lot of different seeds with no names, they were given to me. The red corn is not a variety from the US.
In the Southwest were I lived for some time they had a blue cornmeal that I liked to use.

Nice to have a Dad with a garden! I do miss my Dad, he had the most wonderful and exotic garden you can imagine. He was a great cook too!

Silvia, I love your "delicious" posts - you are not only a great gardener, you are also quite a talented cook!

Thank you Olya, you are always so nice! I hope to meet you one day. You remind me of my cousin, who had a very important job, but his real passion was collecting rare orchids from the Amazon rain forest.
