I've never heard of anything like that. Usually when you cut into a gourd before it's dried and cured, it will rot.

"Healing Squash" is available at the South Carolina Foundation Seed Association at http://virtual.clemson.edu/groups/seed/heirloom.htm, on their heirloom vegetable page.This gourd/squash can be cut in half when young and eaten as squash and the gourd will heal and produce a mature fruit.
