What makes a plant a Stonecrop???

Can someone please explain to me how I can tell what plants are stonecrop? I know allot of Sedums, I've grown, were stonecrop.... are ALL sedums stonecrop? To me some succulents resemble stonecrop plants. Are stonecrop and succulents good companion plants?

Stonecrop is a common name like daisy, not a botanical name like Sedum, so there are no hard/fast rules about using it. I've not heard it applied to any plants besides Sedums (some of which have been renamed Hylotelephium.)

Thank you purpleinopp. Stonecrop being a common name instead of a botanical name explains allot for me. I have spent several years trying to figure it out. Thank you again.
