I hope you'll take that in the spirit intended and not be offended. I hate ivy.

It took me over 4 years to get rid of an area of ivy about 10' X 30' and we worked on it almost every month.

We pulled it, dug it, sprayed it with roundup, covered it with newspaper and thick mulch. Then we watched it closely and pulled anything that poked it's head up. That was last spring, so we're doing good after over a year.

mower, weedeater, RoundUp, other sprays recommended by various sources, pulling by hand (this was probabaly the most effective repeatedly), keeping the leaves off the plant thinking that the vines would just die off without the leaves, motor oil & gasoline (stupid & desperate), burning, black plastic to totally keep the sun off, covering it wtih pulp (a by product from paper machines which killed almost anything [except ivy] that it was placed on, and at one time using a Bobcat to remove the top 10 inches of topsoil.

that about all I can think of right now....this was over 20 years ago

You can get rid of it with professional weed kill, a very thick sticking agent and cutting. My friend has a landscape company and works on ours. I won't let her spray. It has to be repeatedly hand removed which is hard because the neighbors cultivate it in their entire back yards (and up their trees).
