My question is when should they be cut back? As early as Fall once it turns a light brown or in early Spring before blades fall off and aggrevate neighbors when they blow into their yard.

At what size do you divide them? Most divide them once the center dies back/produces fewer plumes -- then dig up perimeter clumps and replant, or give away. Or you can divide them anytime you feel like breaking your back. =)

Can they be planted in large drifts or bunch's? Yes indeed, looks natural when planted in groups. Just don't plant too close to home's foundation. They love water, but grow practically anywhere. DO NOT FERTILIZE, or they'll never flower. Once established, nearly impossible to remove by hand tools.

Well I was just thinking of digging 1 up for the inlaws. Are they really that hard?? Sounds alot like Bamboo.
