When to separate Miscanthus, and how.

I have two clumps of Miscanthus g., both are in need of separating because the clumps are becoming bare in the center. When would be a good time to dig these out and separate them, and what would be the best method without doing too much damage to the clumps? Once they're divided, I plan to just plop them back in the same holes as before, hoping they'll will rejuvenate into nice clumps again.

The center of the crown is dead, and the perimeter, which is the youngest part, is what you want to use.

You can do it in April or May in your zone.

After giving the plant it's annual haircut, cut out segments of the healthy perimeter and set them aside. Dig out the dead center, and refresh the soil previously occupied by the plant.

Select the best of the segments you cut from the perimeter, and plant it, at the same level in relation to the surface of the ground.

Give the other segments to friends, or plant them elsewhere.
