Hardiness is the issue - I'd try Luzula (wood rush) and Chasmanthium (sea oats) and you could possibly try Millium effusum - it may not overwinter well, but it does tend to reseed rather freely so you could have offspring popping up the following years. I'd even try Hakonechloa with a good winter mulch.

I grew both Hakonechloa and Chasmanthium (sea oats) in shady areas of my yard last summer and they both did well. Sea oats survived the winter for sure, as it is already sending up new shoots. I am assuming that Hakonechloa survived as well, but it doesn't show any signs of growth yet.

Other possible candidates are Spodiopogon sibiricus and Brachypodium sylvaticum (which has proved to be invasive in the PNW--unlikely to be in Utah)

I like the carex's. Ice Fountains grows about 30 inches and is green with some white striping, and the cold weather actually brings out the color. It is hardy to z3. We are in z5, and have had real good luck with Evergold, Ice Dance, and The Beatles. The carex's above don't spread here, they are clump forming, but it is easy to divide them and get more, and the variegated leaves brighten up the shady spots.

How many hours of sun does the area receive? Full sun is considered to be 6 hrs per day, but if the 6 hrs are late or early in the day, that doesn't count for much. The 6 hrs needs to be when the sun is high in the sky.

For grasses like Miscanthus and others that are tall and big bloomers, you shouldn't skimp on sun. They may flop or not bloom very well. But there are others that are worth a try in 5-6 hrs per day. Calamagrostis 'Overdam' actually likes a little protection from hot sun.

What I am getting at is that there are many types of "shade".

Calamagrostis brachytricha, recently reclassified as Stipa b. Will grow in full sun or partial shade, as its native habitat is at the edges of woods or open woodland. (Note "edges" of woods, not deep shade.) Mine do well in zone 5 with a bit less than "full" (see above) sun. Moist soil.
