Yes, technically you can divide them now but what's the rush? Why not wait till they're finished blooming or better still, wait till it cools off in the Fall. If you decide to divide them now it probably won't kill them but it may set them back. I have divided hosta in the Summer and in the Fall and those done in the Fall are noticably bigger and healthier so I would think that would apply to like plants.

I usually divide daylillies in the fall, but I've heard of doing it in the spring before they get buds. You could move them now, but I wouldn't divide them. It does set them back.

I've been here a year, and have nearly full sun, after 20+ years of shade gardening in Roswell. These daylilies are in an area immediately next to my deck, which I need to tear off and rebuild. Have so many projects going and know I should tackle one at a time, but .......!

LOL, no you can't kill them. I dug some up last fall, forgot about them, and they were lying on the ground all winter. They rooted and are now blooming. I suppose I should replant them somewhere.

I did move some other ones a couple of days ago. They don't seem to be suffering at all. Just water them.

You can move and divide them at any time. I had a very overgrown flower bed that I needed to renovate. I dug up everything and replanted. Some of the daylilies bloomed in the temporary pots (with just a little soil thrown over them) before I even got them into their new location. I have even heard the recommendation to move and divide them while blooming to be sure you know what colors are going where you want them. I didn't wait for mine to bloom before moving them but as I said, some bloomed anyway, so I was able to place the colors exactly where they look best. Were they set back? Yes, the stems were shorter than usual on some.

I divide mine any time. Last time was in July of 2004. They were still kind of small last year, but you've seen them this year and know how big they are. Really, you can't hurt them. The most you can do is interfere with this year's blooms.

I moved some last week without any problem. I water them before and after the transplant. When they are in bloom it does help to know the size/color, etc. I've tried to tag and label them for future moves but that doesn't always work for me.

If the foliage gets tattered looking from the stress just cut them back when they are done flowering and they will grow new clean foliage.
