Last year I used fertilizer spikes around my pumpkin plants and I was wondering if it would also work to just use a granular fertilizer by poking a few holes around the plant and putting the fertilizer in the holes? If so, how much fertilizer would you apply around each plant using this method and how close to the plant? The spikes were 5-7 inches away from the plant.
