Some varieties of Ajuga do that more than others, but you should be able to fix it fairly easily. Take some of the runners that are going the right direction--or redirect some--and weave them under any old foliage that's in there so they're in direct contact with the soil and they'll quickly root and start filling in that area again. If they won't stay in contact with the soil, bend a little piece of wire into a "U" and tack them down. Or you could dig up some small plugs that are already rooted around the edges and replant them in the middle and let them go.

I never heard of an Ajuga donut before! Is it tasty?

Look for a sort that does not do this. On my property, unless I take efforts, the plain, green leafed, purple-blue flowered Ajuga reptans makes a solid, aggressive cover. At the moment, the one area I allow to grow without pulling the plants is a solid sheet of flowers.
