If you mean planting the groundcovers directly into the grass and other weeds/plants, no, not really :-) Turf grasses tend to be very aggressive, greedy plants and it's very tough to attempt to establish a small new groundcover in the middle of it without the grass overwhelming and choking out the GC. And you will always be battling the grass in the area.

If it is too much trouble to dig out the area, try layering it with multiple sheets of newspaper (you want a good thickness), well-moistened, and then covered with a mulch, extra soil or compost. Cut back any tall growing plants or weeds first. In a couple of months - at this time of year - the underlying plants and grass should have been smothered and killed off and you can work in the partially decomposed newsprint and mulch and then plant your groundcovers.

If you have bermuda grass, I'd dig out a clean edge before I tried this, as this grass will continue to creep and invade any planting area unless restricted by a edging. And then you'll be in the same unfortunate place as if you had planted directly into the grass.
