My DH calls them millipedes. I am irrationally horrifed by them;they have been showing up with alarming frequency since the begining of our new monsoon season. BIG ones, more than an inch long! One at 4 AM when I was on the commode with pajama pants around my ankles!!Boy,did I really wake up in a hurry!!

It is a house centipede which is different than a millipede. If you care to look closely (probably not) centipedes have two legs per segment of body while millipedes have four. Their diets are also completely different, centipedes are predatory and will help rid your home of insect pests. Millipedes are decomposers and eat dead organic matter. Centipedes rarely bite humans, however, they will bite in self defense. Their bite is slightly venomous with a reaction similar to a bee sting. To discourage them keep all areas of the house dry, and dust dark places with diatomaceous earth.

Ah, yes. My evening nemesis, the house centipede. If you can find an aerosol boric acid, that can be quite helpful in spraying across baseboards, doorways, and any avenue of entry. My little visitors come from the garage and I think the chimney. The boric acid applications have stopped it.

Horticultural diatomaceous earth would do a good job, too.
