Hi Tony,

Lamium is usually considered more of a shady groundcover, though I find it does pretty well in almost any light conditions. The more sun it's getting, the more water it will probably need. If you decide to use Lamium, I recommend 'Pink Pewter'. It has soft pink flowers that are really lovely against the white & green foliage. If you want the flowers to show, stay away from the ones with white flowers like 'White Nancy', because they blend in and are hardly visible against the light foliage. I love Lamium. There are also a lot of pretty Ajuga's with varying size and color leaves. Will also want more water in sun. For a good groundcover that needs the sun, any of the creeping thymes would work well. The brightest colored one is Thymus praecox 'Coccineus' with bright rosy-pink flowers, but there are also ones with different shades of pink or white flowers. All of these spread on the surface, so if you keep them controlled from the very beginning you shouldn't have much trouble with them.

the more sun they get, the more 'silver' shows in their leaves- I have one patch in part shade, and one in almost full sun (from the same cutting) and they're totally different colors...

but they're great plants- and they make a great ground cover for the roots of something like a clematis, which will climb up the mailbox post with a little help ;)
