cutting gourd vines now

I have some small egg type gourds that are the size I want right now and would like to know if it would be O K to cut it off now and leave maybe a 3" stem--I want to use them for Christmas ornaments--Can anyone help me? Have any of you tried this? I need to know soon or it will get to big for what I want--Thanks.....Nancy
