I experiment with others which get by with less than full sun. They include Miscanthus, Festuca and other Pennisetums.

And let's not forget Japanese forest grass, Hakonechloa macra and its various cultivars. Part shade is the preferred siting for these.

I was just admiring my Hakones this afternoon. They're coming in beautifully this year. I've committed myself (appropriate) to building a raised stone planter soon, with a weeping Japanese Maple in the middle and Hakone all around to hang down over the wall.
