It is in no way a squash it is just a common weed. They come up in my garden all the time. I wish I knew the name of it for you but I don't. I can however guarentee you that it is not a squash of any sort.

Correction I do know what it is. It is known as velvetleaf.

There is no danger to crops--it popped up in a container of morning glories I have in my city backyard.

I had those popping up in my gourd patch too. The vines loved them. Wrapped their little tentacles all around them, added a 3d effect to the garden. Till husband got after it with a machette. I agree, it's nothing but a weed with an incredibly tough root system.

Soooo - THAT is what it is! Darn!
I got in a load of top soil and the next year those darn things popped up everywhere. To me they are as bad as those Chinese Lanterns that take over and can be a real pest to get rid of. I have been trying to get rid of that velvet leaf in that new garden for two years now - and it still hangs around and pops up. grrrrrr. Thanks for identifying it.
