Do you know what variety of grass it is? It looks somewhat like Hakone Grass (Hakonechloa macra), in which case, the habit looks correct.

Unfortunately, I do not know which variety it is. It was inherited from the previous owner of our home.

Not Hakone Grass, aka Japanese forest grass.

Perhaps Molinia caerulea Skyracer. If so, that's the normal habit for the leaves. The bloom stems will stand vertical.

I hate to say this, but the grass mounds are getting worse...is this really the natural habit of this grass b/c it looks like it's almost dead in the center.

Are these grasses growing in a really shady spot??
Could you take a close up picture of one of the leaves??

Quite honestly, the grasses all look like Miscanthus sinensis to me. Very unhappy Miscanthus sinensis. Growing in too much shade & in serious need of division.

If you look closely at the second last image you can see a faint hint of horizontal yellow banding - similar to a poor selection of M. Zebrinus or little dot or ....

Either dig them up & move them next spring.
Or .... get them more sun!

I think you're right, A. I didn't notice the banding before, but upon zooming, I see it clearly. I also see the center line in many of the leaves, and this would explain the apparent center die-out. A very common condition with Miscanthus.

Yes, they are almost directly under a towering oak tree...

I was thinking that when I trimmed them in late Winter/early Spring, that I didn't cut back enough of last year's growth...or even cut them too late. Here are some before/after pics:

I'm pretty sure I can't give them more sun, but is there any other option besides moving them to get them back to health?

It looks like you cut them back as far as you could..just above the new growth. You could have started earlier, and cut them shorter, but it really doesn't matter.

There isn't anything you can do about too little sun, other than to replace them with grasses which can deal with less sun.

I see the banding now too. Poor things really want full sun.
