I know of no variety that won't spread. To keep a border of Liriope usually requires some kind of barrier. I used 3 1/2"concrete blocks buried in the ground on edge leaving about 1" protruding above the ground then planted sprigs in the open cavaties. This allows for trimming of lawn and trimming of Liriope in spring. Any good 6" edging should contain it also.

There are two kinds of liriope: clumping and running. If new plants are popping up that aren't right next to the parent plants, you have the running type. Go to Walter Reeves' (the Georgia Gardner)website and do a search on lirope.

I think liriope muscari is the clumping type. The running type is liriope spicata. If you have spicata and want to get rid of it and are in the Atlanta area, I'll take it off your hands. I'm always looking for more spicata.

If you're in Sandy Springs in the next two weeks check out the huge beds at the Methodist Church on Mt. Vernon Road(west of Roswell Rd.). They are awesome right now in full bloom.

Mine is starting to bloom right now and looking pretty.

I think both the running and clumping types spread. I have to keep on digging out the inside border of liriope that I have curving around some of my flower beds but it's very pretty around the beds and especially now with it in bloom. I saw a hummingbird feeding on the tiny purple blooms on the bloom spike which surprised me. One nice thing to do with liriope is to put it in a circle bed under a Red Maple where NOTHING else will grow. It will fill in and makes a pretty green area that stays green in the winter also under this tree. It's especially pretty in bloom.

i have the clumping type, and mine spread by seed. I can tell because I will get a new one in the middle of nowhere not connected to any of the other ones, and the only new ones that ARE connected to the old ones are right next to them.
