Japanese maple problems

I have a Japanese maple Viridis lace leaf that my MIL gave me. I had it outside in the nursery pot, it had some leaf dieback after that freeze in April, but it came back. Once the 90's hit last month, I decided to repot it, and bring it inside until we could figure out where we wanted it outside. I was watering every other week or so (I may have been lazy there at first), and lately every week. I watered about a gallon at a time with a watering can. The last 2-3 times I've watered, I haven't had any excess emerge from the bottom, and the leaves are dry and crispy. I haven't dug down in the dirt to check out the roots, yet. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your advice.

Pam
