dutch white clover seed

I have a failing lawn due to poor soil, and three large dogs and their urine, I have been reading that dutch white clover seed might be the way to go. Does anyone have any experience with this scenario? If so how long would the dogs be required to stay off of the newly seeded lawn? Btw, I live in the central Michigan area.
