Cut off a piece, strip all but tip leaves. Cut the branch to about 5" long, stick the end in root tone. Put it in very well draining soil (I mix extra perlite with potting soil and river sand or paver sand) and stick a plastic bag over it, with a small hole cut in it (a tent) tie the bag on. Bottom water (a very little bit) and leave it for a week or two somewhere in a shady, cool location. I root my stuff in a 79 degree environment, in light but not direct light.

I would do this but from what I have been reading it is not easy to root an Eastern Redbud and I just have a 10 inch branch with 4 variegated leaves. I would not have a second chance if it did not root. I have also read about rooting by removing part of bark, wrapping with moist sphagnum moss, taping plastic wrap over area and wait for rooting. This sounds promising but the branch is less than 1/4 inch in diameter. Is there a more for sure way to root or should I wait until next year when this limb is bigger?

Frankielynn: I've read that too, and I suspect if you decide to try rooting your branch that way, you may need to wait for slightly cooler weather. it would be so hot under plastic wrap. I would probably wait, wait until very early next spring or late winter before the tree blooms.
The only other method I know of for very tough to root plants is a misting system.

I was just up at Kinsey farms in Gainesville - they have a variegated redbud. I forgot the cultivar name?? Dang. It's new on the market and he (Andy Kinsey) had more coming. They were testing these to see how well they do. If you are in that area you might ask them, they are very friendly and will talk redbud for awhile!

Thanks for the update I will contact them and see what they say. I did speak with the owner of a really great nearby nursery who also is/was an instructor at the college and he said they are difficult to root and gave me the names of 2 people who might help me. He also said that when the leaves are streaked they sometimes revert back to green. I am going to wait until next year when there is more growth so there will be more than 1 chance of getting something.

I especially loved the one with peach leaves. I contacted an expert in a Tn nursery and he confirmed that it needed to wait and would probably revert back to green. It also has some burn due to the sun on the leaves so wouldn't be a great specimen. He recommended 'Alley Cat'as a good variegated that wouldn't burn. I will wait and try air layering next year just for the fun of it and see what happens.
