Cutting Back Homestead Verbena

Douglasville, GA here, just west of Atlanta. My Homestead verbena has bloomed and is now covered with spent blossoms and dried up leaves. In the past I've cut it back severely and it hasn't rebloomed until the next year. Any suggestions it REALLY looks bad?

I think I right about this...

It blooms on new wood, so cutting it back will not hurt it. In fact it will help it. But it needs to grow to get new blooms, and I don't think it will grow a lot in the heat.

If anybody has better ideas I'd like to hear them too.
