plant suggestions needed

My mom has a flower bed that is located under her living room windows that she needs some plant suggestions for. We live in zone 9a and the area in question gets little to no direct sunlight. The rest of the front beds have a rather tropical look to them with lots of gingers , coonties, palms, cannas, crinums, and various brightly flowered perennials. Whatever is planted directly in front of the windows can't get over 3 feet tall so that it doesn't block the windows. Here are some pictures of the problem area as well as some of the other front flower beds.

Here's the problem bed. The crape myrtles flanking the windows will be coming out since they haven't done well since the nearby live oaks and gum tree have gotten bigger.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Mom would really like to plant something in this are that would bloom most of the summer. She's considering replacing the crapes with a couple large ever blooming hydrangeas that are supposed to get about 6 feet tall. Does anyone here have any experience with that type of hydrangeas?
