shelving on tub deck

I am about to do this in my master bath as I think it is such a great use of the space and a wonderful design element. I have 56" (w) x 22" (h) and allotted 10" off the deck to the first shelf, making that shelf just 1" and then another 10" to the top shelf. The depth is 8". Does that sound right to you? Thank you so much. I just don't want to botch this great addition to the room.

I think what makes these shelves such a success is the solid proportions. I would recommend 2" thick shelves, and then equally space them from the tub deck. Good luck with your project!

What are the shelves made of, are they covered in the tile or are they another material?

Gorgeous design, I really like this look, and am trying to achieve similar in our current bathroom reno. Our contractor is telling me that he wants to frame the shelves out of 2x4, set on the long side, so the shelf thickness would be close to 6"!! From this pic, it looks like they are about 3" thick or so. Can you suggest how I suggest that our contractor frame the shelves and the back wall?
