How tall and wide do you want it, and what are the sun exposures?

Donn, It can get as tall as 3 feet and wide about the same. The hostas that's there now is about 3 feet wide.
The front of the house faces North.

You have lots of choices in the 3' x 3' range. It sounds like you probably don't have full sun (6+ hours a day) in either location.

The first step is to decide what physical characteristics you want in the grass. Form ranges from arching and floppy to rigid and upright. Then there's color, of both the foliage and the blooms. Then the nature of the blades...narrow and wiry, or wide?

Spend some time at the site linked below. It's a wonderful source of information about ornamental grasses, and even has a comparison chart of them. They also concentrate on grasses for your zone, and colder.
