new plot!

My husband just cut down three dogwoods, which were dead and/or dying, so now we have a good place for a new bed. Presently we have sod in most of the area, although in early spring we have paperwhites and daffodils that pop up. We also have a walk with english ivy, daylilies, and a tea olive bordering it. We want to replace the sod with something pretty and useful. Due to some remaining pecans and dogwoods surrounding the area and because it is right next to the house, we have partial shade. We have acid soil, sandy loam. Any ideas for what plants I should try? I really wanted to do strawberries with a smattering of herbs and flowers. Is that advisable?
