Sedum ogon does not mind having moist feet at times. It might be a nice choice.

Do you get some moisture there, or is it all very dry sand? That is important? Some carex would work - there is dry land carex and moisture loving carex, they mix nicely with the round leaf of the sedum.

Steve, are you thinking shrub, dwarf tree or do you just want perennial things? It seems to me that a shrub or weeping small tree is what you need to balance that group of rocks. Perennials might be lost (unless you use a big hunking clump of joe pye weed).

How much sun does the area actually get and is it morning sun or afternoon?

It's pretty dry, only the front edge by the pond gets wet. It gets pretty hot afternoon sun, but is shaded by a river birch during the morning.

You can almost see the Japanese Maple on the left edge of the photo. So I'm thinking another tree on the backside of the pile, will take away from the maple.
