This is harvesting time for sweet corn, not planting time. Planting should occur after the soil has warmed up in the spring...perhaps in April? Your extension office will have suggested planting dates for sweet corn.

I strongly suggest that you research some of the newer extra sweet varieties. Most of them make that old Silver Queen taste just plain ordinary! Go online to send for some catalogs. You have plenty of time to plan.

That's kind of what I figured. I was never able to get my corn plants to get past the hottest part of the summer though.

Here in N. Alabama (7a), the major sweet corn crop began coming in three weeks ago or so. Considering that most of the corn hybrids take anywhere from 65 to 75 days to mature....that gives you a ball park figure of when the planting began around here.

Soil temperatures should reach around 55 degrees before you plant. Sandier soils warm up faster than clayey soils, so that would give someone a bit of an edge. Corn planted too late is more likely to have earworm problems as well as be effected by the heat.
