Armenian Yard Longs

Hi! It sure has been a while!

Anyway, this year, I decided to plant some Armenian Yard Longs. I know that they're eaten like cucumbers, but technically, they're gourds, so I thought I'd check in here first. Nothing came up on the search, so...

I planted and tend according to package directions, but all I have is a LOT of LOOOOONG vine, a whole mess of flowers, and only two fruits to date. (And these are tricky plants: You can't tell the male from female flowers like you can on cucs, because they grow this loooong vine from the main vine to the flower!)

Anyone have an idea of what's going on? Is it possible that I have the opposite of a gynoecious plant? (Don't know what an all-male-flowered plant would be called...)

well if they are long gourdes could it be that the vine coming from some of the flowers is acually the gourd on the end of the flower? Follow me or am I crazy

Well, I do follow you, but I don't think I know you well enough to say whether or not you're crazy. ;)

As for the flowers, I was just complaining that I can't tell the girl flowers from the boy flowers. And I could not figure out why I wasn't getting any fruit.

I'm thinking (now that the temps have dropped off to "normal") that the weather was just too hot for the fruit to set. After a good couple days' rain and cooler temps, more fruit is setting on the vines -- and the vines are running rampant! Over the bamboo trellis I made, into the aisles between the raised beds...

NOW I'm wondering if this stuff is related to kudzu!
