Pampas Grass winter protection

I have a huge 6-yr-old clump of regular Pampas Grass (Cortaderia Selloana)which is healthy except for a 2 ft. diameter dead center. I live in zone 6b and wondered if the center is dead because it needs winter protection, or does P.G. naturally die out in the center after several years? What is the best way to provide winter protection?

From what I understand, every few years, you should divide your ornamental grasses, as they do start to die from the middle. I did that this spring and it was quite a chore because the root system was so thick. It took DH and I almost 2 hours to cut it in half with our shovels. However, because we divided the plant, I now have 3 plants growing!
