I've heard that sour cherries stand a chance in Atlanta. Never seen one & I'm sure they're loads of trouble (spraying for bugs & disease, netting for birds, etc.). Most of your standard fruit trees (apple, peach, plum, etc.) are high maintenance in Georgia.

My husband loves cherries (he grew up in northern Michigan) so I am growing a Stella Sweet Cherry. Supposedly it is one of the most likely to fruit here. It has something to do with having enough cold hours. Mine is a couple years old and is in a large pot (it is a semi-dwarf). It isn't anywhere close to fruiting yet but it is surviving.

Up here near the north end of Lake Lanier in Hall County, my two cherries are still babies, 2 years in ground, so no real experience to report yet. However, with NO spraying of either: My self-pollinating sour Montmorency cherry has been doing just fine, putting out a handful of cherries both years which were taken by birds before I could try them out. I'm going to get a couple more, for the birds if nothing else. My Lapins sweet cherry is pretty much a bug-bitten mess; will allow to grow and get some vigor to assess before pulling out--if it doesn't just die for lack of some fussing over instead. Both started as good plants from Johnson-Ford Nursery up near Ellijay. Great local source for fruit trees.

will the sour and the sweet pollinate each other? i only have room for one of each.
