i just searched SVB & read thru the archives. they are definitely what i have. it seems that having done in the vines they have moved on to the squash. what is BT?

BT is a bacteria that attacks different insects. I've never used it but I believe there are different Bt's for select insects. I've read of people injecting(with a siringe) BT into the squash vines to kill SVB. You should google BT. It is a cool very select organic control method.
I'm in Georgia,and SVB is just brutal. I only have a small kitchen garden, so I cover my zuchinni and yellow squash with a floating row cover until the female flowers start blooming. By then the plants are robust enough to handle the SVB, and I hand pick the squash bugs. Or give my 7 year old a nickel a bug. When I'm really with it, I'll repeat the process for a late summer crop.

Also, if you wish to grow a resistant squash/pumpkin, something that will almost certainly survive and thrive in spite of squash vine borers; then try planting squash from the c. moschata family. These are almost always able to resist borers. Butternut is the most widely grown member of this family. But there are a lot of others.

Here is a link to a c. moschata I tried this year. It didn't suffer any casualties from any insects.
